Obituary for Philip N. Savage

Philip Nicholas Savage, 95, of Newton Centre, died January 5, 2014, after a brief illness. Beloved husband of his late wife of 63 years Alyce (Dunne) Savage. Devoted father of his four daughters Margaret (Peg) Dowd and her husband Scott, Phyllis Savage and her husband Eric Read, Patricia Savage, Marilyn Arndt and her husband Douglas. Cherished grandfather to Linda (Arndt) Schiller and her husband Garrett, Phillip Arndt, Deidre Arndt, Jonathan Read, and Christopher Read. Brother of the late George A. Savage, Jr. and William F. Savage. Born in Dorchester on October 11, 1918, he has been a long time Newton resident of 65 years. A U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, one of the "last of the living legends", Philip was a Staff Sergeant with the U.S. Army 746 Bombardment Squadron 456 Bombardment Group as an Information Specialist with qualifications as an expert gunner, marksman rifle, and marksman carbine. A proud graduate of Northeastern University LA '40 he competed on the track team. After the war he continued his education at Northeastern earning an LLB '46 which was converted to a Juris Doctorate in the 1960's. Parishioner of Mary Immaculate of Lourdes Church, Newton Upper Falls. Retired from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Welfare as the Director of Administration. Funeral from the Burke & Blackington Funeral Home,1479 Washington St. (Rte. 16) West Newton, Thursday, January 9th at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in Mary Immaculate of Lourdes Church, 279 Elliot St., Newton Upper Falls at 10:30 a.m. Visiting hours Wednesday evening from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Interment in St. Joseph's Cemetery, West Roxbury. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Philip's name to the charity of your choice.
