Our beloved mother, Dorothy Gannon Hansberry, age 92 died at home with her family on January 25, 2014. Born on February 28, 1921 in Boston Massachusetts, she grew up in Waltham, Massachusetts. She graduated from Emmanuel College and dedicated her professional life to teaching. Most of her career was spent at Newton South High School, where she was highly respected for her equal beliefs in the intrinsic worth of each student, and the value of language and literature in shaping an individual. Dorothy was a long time resident of Wellesley, Massachusetts. Survivors include all six of her children: Mary D. H. McCarthy, Margaret T. Duval, Dorothy Hansberry-Biegunska, Jane F. Hansberry, Martin F. Hansberry and Sarah E. Hansberry. Other family members include her 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She was the widow of Martin Joseph Hansberry ,and was also preceded in death by her grandson Bret Worthington McCarthy. A funeral Mass for Dorothy will be celebrated at 11 AM on Saturday , February 8, 2014 at St. John the Evangelist Church, 9 Glen Road, Wellesley Hills, Massachusetts. Visitation with family will precede the Mass at 10 AM at Henry J. Burke & Sons Funeral Home located directly across from the Church at 56 Washington Street, Wellesley Hills, Massachusetts.
