Obituary for Calvin R. Cupp

Calvin R. Cupp, M.A.Sc., Ph.D. Calvin Cupp, 92, died in his sleep in the early hours of January 4th, 2017, after a full life and a wonderful marriage of over sixty-seven years with his beloved wife Ellen. Cal and Ellen were blessed with four children: Leanne, Gillian, David, and Jane; and three grandchildren: Christa, Ellen and Lauren.
Cal was born in Toronto on June 7, 1924 and educated at Wilkinson Public School and Riverdale Collegiate. He joined the Canadian Army in 1943 at the age of 18. He served in the United Kingdom and Northwest Europe in the 11th Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery, and briefly used his high school German to work as an interpreter. He returned home in June 1946, and studied metallurgy at the University of Toronto from 1946 to 1950, fulfilling an ambition he’d harbored since the age of eight. He married Ellen in 1949, and in 1953, he completed his Ph.D. in Metal Physics. After graduation, Cal worked for many years at International Nickel Company, where, among other things, he introduced x-ray fluorescence as an industrial analytical tool. From 1957-1961, he was seconded to Atomic Energy of Canada at Chalk River, where he worked with W. Bennett Lewis conducting studies in radiation damage to high-temperature alloys--research critical to safety considerations for nuclear submarines. He was elected a Fellow of ASM International in 1978, and became a Life Member in 1991. In 1988, he was invited by Queen’s University to work on the protection of the University’s intellectual property as Executive Director of PARTEQ Research & Development Innovations, a position he held until the time of his retirement in 1991.
During his career, Cal was a prolific writer and lecturer, and published a number of major papers in technical journals. He served as President of the Metal Science Club of New York from 1972-73, and was a charter member of the “Bookinistes” book club in Kingston, Ontario.
After retirement, Cal and an Army comrade helped create the Canadian-Netherlands Memorial Park in Groesbeck, Holland, and shared the dedication of the Park with Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet on Liberation Day, May 5, 1998. He and Ellen traveled extensively, and Cal enjoyed documenting these trips with his careful observations and many beautiful photographs.
Cal was a dedicated correspondent; a student of history (especially that of the Second World War); and a lover of the outdoors, photography, poetry, and good food (including oysters). He was a voracious reader and a skilled conversationalist. Above all, he was a scientist and an engineer: detailed, precise, relentlessly curious and inquisitive, open-minded, and always ready to engage with interesting people and challenging ideas. He loved sharing the insights and stories he’d acquired over the course of a varied and rich life, and he touched those around him with his charm, thoughtfulness, common sense, and quiet good humor.
A memorial service will be held on January 8, 2017, at 2:00 in the afternoon, at the Wellesley Hills Congregational Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Office of Development, 330 Brookline, MA 02215 (please make checks payable to BID Medical Center and include “Cardiovascular Research Fund” in the memo line), or Calvin R. and Ellen M.
