Obituary for Susan F. Nauss (Fifield)

Susan F. Nauss (Fifield)
Nauss, Susan Fifield, of Newton Highlands Massachusetts died peacefully in her sleep Saturday, April 7,

2018 after a long illness. Beloved mother of Ben (deceased), Sarah, David and Amy. Mother-in-law of

Jan de Wit, Karen Sebastian and Mike Peavey. And grandmother of Franklin de Wit, Arthur de Wit and

his partner Melinda Escandell-Beutick.

Born October 30, 1930 in Holyoke Massachusetts, Sue was the third child of Ralph and Marion Fifield

and sister to Ralph and Henry Fifield. She attended Holyoke public schools and received her degree in

Zoology from Connecticut College for Women. After college, she married Earl Franklin Nauss, Jr of

Nashua NH and settled in the Boston area where she worked at the Harvard College Labs before starting

a family.

She moved to Newton Highlands where she, Earl and their kids shared a driveway with the Stomberg

family. The close friendships that grew out of that time together were among her most treasured and

live on among the children today.

In the late 60’s, Sue and Earl bought a Volkswagen camping business in the Netherlands called

“Continental Campers.” For nearly a decade the family spent part of every year in Amsterdam running

the company and traveling around Europe. After losing Earl to cancer in the late 70s, Sue sold the

company in Amsterdam and went on to a career in the travel industry before taking an administrative

job at Boston University in the late 80s where she stayed until her retirement in 2003 .

Sue always appreciated the friendships she had in Newton Highlands and worked to keep in touch

despite the challenges of being a single parent with a full time job. She cherished her neighborhood

women’s coffee meetings, often hosted her Bridge club, played tennis on a neighborhood court , and

was a member of the Newton Highlands Congregational Church where she served as its first female

moderator. She also belonged to the Newton Women’s Club and Highland Circle and volunteered at the

Hyde Elementary School library and could be seen most mornings picking up friends at a little before

6am to go swim at Newton North High School Pool.

In retirement, she continued to travel and visit family and friends in Vermont, the Netherlands, Alaska,

France, and Scandinavia. She was a voracious reader and did the New York Times crossword daily. She

also loved volunteering with the ladies at the Auburndale Branch of the Newton Public Library.

Sue will be truly missed by her family and friends. A celebration of her life was held in the Netherlands

on Saturday April 21st. She will be buried in a private ceremony at Newton Cemetery. A memorial

funeral service will be held at the Newton Highlands Congregational Church, May 5th at 11am. In lieu of

flowers, please make a donation in her name to the newtonfreelibrary.net/friends/
